Shredder Care Tips
Keeping your shredder in perfect working order couldn't be simpler, if you follow the simple advice detailed below then you will not only prolong the life of your shredder but will also experience far less paper jams and service issues.
Emptying the Waste
It may seem obvious but problems can arise if the waste shred is not removed from your machine frequently enough. Once the bin is full, shredded material can block the exit point below the cutting head and cause the shredder to stop feeding documents correctly. It is advisable to use waste sacks in the bin as this will make emptying quicker, cleaner and much simpler. Don't forget if you want to spend less time emptying your shredder opt for a "cross cut" model, these reduce the volume of the waste significantly over "strip cut" versions, therefore less emptying!
Cleaning
This is not something that needs to be done every week but we do advise that once in a while you empty the shredder of waste material and clean the debris that has accumulated inside the bin and around the cutting head, ENSURE THAT THE UNIT IS SWITCHED OFF AND YOU UNPLUG THE SHREDDER FROM THE MAINS. It stands to reason that by reducing the dust, debris and leftover shredded material will keep your shredder working correctly.
Lubricating
The most important task of maintenance for your shredder is "lubricating" the cutting head, we call it "lubricating" to avoid confusion. It is commonly referred to as "oiling" or "shredder oil", this has presented problems where users have applied a non machine specific lubricant to a cutting head. Just like an engine oil for your car has a specific formula so does the correct "lubricant" for your shredder, each manufacturer has its own "lubricant" and this is the only type that should be used for your shredder.
To "lubricate" the cutting head simply spray or squeeze the "lubricant" in a figure of eight shape onto a plain piece of paper then run it through the shredder, we recommend you do this after every 15 minutes of continuous use or every time you empty the waste bin, whichever is sooner. By completing this maintenance regularly you will keep the cutting head free from debris and allow it to run smoothly, prolonging the life of the gears, bearings and motor.
Servicing
A large proportion of our "business user" and "public sector user" shredders can be serviced by our engineers. Ensure that you are have cover in place should a fault occur with your machine. We can offer you a package that best suits your requirements and the workload your shredder will receive.
PLEASE NOTE: Using the wrong lubricant in your shredder may invalidate the manufacturer's warranty.
